Mine is a great, big Italian family. We can find a way to label almost any occasion "special," so as to make an excuse to get together for a big family dinner. When I was a kid, these dinners were always at my grandparents house and always included a mountainous bowl of spaghetti.
Both my grandparents were Italian immigrants and both were soup spoon savants. There was only one problem: my Grandma was from Northern Italy; my Grandpa from the southern tip. To them, their homemade spaghetti sauces were as different as salsa and grape jelly (to me they were both delicious, of course).
I can remember my Grandma telling my Grandpa, with wooden spoon raised, "the only way fix this sauce is to dump the whole bowl on the floor!"
That image has always stuck with me - a convoluted web of stringy, spindly, fibrous lines connecting the haphazard meatball to the stray red pepper.
I was reminded of that imagery while reading the two big parties' responses to the proposed health reform legislation.
First, the Republicans brought us this handy "Organizational Chart of the House Democrats Health Plan."
Not to be outdone, the Democrats responded with a critique of the current health care system called, "Your HealthCare System: A Map."
Both are piles of dumped spaghetti, indeed.
In an effort to propagandize each other's plans, both sides have misplaced the most important element.
Health care reform cannot succeed unless the patient is at the center of the map.
